Papillon (starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman) is almost intolerably sad at times, but also a testament to the indomitable spirit of man. The performances are otherworldly. McQueen, who normally would look tough crocheting a baby bonnet, here allows himself to be completely vulnerable, dissolved. I remember watching this as a young girl with my father- Steve McQueen's blue eyes absorbed me completely. A classic buddy/prison movie in some ways, but too provocative and emotionally arresting to fit that categorization only. This film is soaked in grit, madness, resiliency. I challenge anyone not to bawl like crazy at the end.
Below is one of the dream sequences suffered by McQueen's character during a cruel stretch in solitary confinement.
