Remedios Varo

Remedios Varo

(María de los Remedios Varo Uranga) was born in Angles, Girona, Spain in 1908. A smokin' hot Spanish-Mexican surrealist, and fellow Sagittarius - she married the French surrealist poet Benjamin Peret and is rumored to have taken classes with fellow student Salvador Dali. Her paintings are mysterious and exquisite works executed with oils on masonite panels she primed herself. As part of the artistic movement in Mexico she became friends with (among others) fellow artist Diego Rivera- who probably tried to sleep with her.

In her
paintings women made of flames roam hallways, nuns ride bicycles, and men with beards levitate. The works are rapturous and vibrate with color in scenes that are celestial, paranormal, alchemical and remarkably playful musings from the subconscious. Influenced by her father's profession (he was a hydraulic engineer), intricate pieces of machinery are depicted in many of the backgrounds as well. Varo was also fascinated by the legend of the holy grail and by geometry- additional themes that are prevalent in her vision.
